New space telescope will map galaxies’ ghostly halos and streams

science.org·Jun 17, 2026

The European Space Agency has approved the ARRAKIHS mission, a new space telescope designed to map the dim halos and stellar streams surrounding galaxies to enhance understanding of galaxy formation and the role of dark matter. Scheduled for launch by the end of 2030, ARRAKIHS aims to study around 80 Milky Way-like galaxies, providing insights into their formation histories and the distribution of dark matter.

The ESA's newly approved ARRAKIHS mission will map the faint halos and stellar streams around galaxies, providing insights into the formation history of galaxies like the Milky Way and probing the distribution of dark matter. This mission, set to launch by 2030, will significantly enhance our understanding of galaxy assembly and the elusive properties of dark matter, offering a substantial opportunity for further research in cosmology and astrophysics.
