A billion miles in less than a decade: GM's Super Cruise reaches a milestone

arstechnica.com·Apr 28, 2026

General Motors' Super Cruise system has surpassed one billion miles driven since its 2017 launch, demonstrating strong user engagement with a high renewal rate among owners. The system, which is currently limited to hands-free driving on mapped highways, is set to evolve into a more advanced version that allows for "eyes-off" driving by 2028.

GM's strategic approach to Super Cruise, which includes geofencing the system to lidar-scanned and HD-mapped highways, has led to a high user retention rate of nearly 40%, emphasizing the importance of robust mapping in achieving customer stickiness. This insight suggests focusing on expanding and enhancing HD mapping capabilities could be a key differentiator for autonomous vehicle systems, especially as GM prepares to launch a more advanced "level 3" system with eyes-off highway capability by 2028.
